Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a jolly and enjoyable Christmas and New Year break (if you had a break at all!). From what the children tell me, they’ve all had a wonderful time.  This is Year 4’s half termly letter to keep you informed of the curriculum and activities for the forthcoming half term.

Our main topic this half term is called ‘From out of the shadows’. We will be finding out about light, dark, shadows and how light can be reflected. We will then move on to investigating electricity and how a circuit works to make a bulb light up (using batteries only!) After this we will investigate how we create sound.

In numeracy we shall be investigating fractions, co-ordinates and area in addition to number work involving 6, 7 and 9 multiplication tables. Literacy will see us investigating Fairy tales and persuasive writing. This will involve the children being introduced to a raft of new writing skills and opportunities.

I will also be sending spelling home on a Friday this term. These can be learnt over the week ready for a test on the following Friday. As always, the secret to learning anything is to practice a little, often. I will also be setting ‘mymaths’ challenges for the children every second week in addition to maths homework in their homework books.

You can continue to send in reading folders daily as they are also useful for sending letters home. Children will have the opportunity to change their book twice a week as long as the reading record is signed by a parent or carer.

You can help your child by:

  • Discussing any of the topics we have looked at in school.
  • Listening to them read throughout the week.
  • Encouraging them to keep up their Independent Learning Log.

Your child will need their P.E kit in school every week. We have P.E on a Monday.

Ten minute drop in sessions are available each Monday between 3.30p.m – 4p.m if you need to discuss any school matters. (Please ask to sign the appointment sheet.)

N.B If your child is late for school please use the main entrance so that he/she can be registered.
